The pen is mightier than the sword.

Quote by Edward Bulwer-Lytton.

Although this quote was originally stated in 1839, it is a saying my mother imprinted in my mind from the time I
was a young child. This is not a story of a perfect family, in fact, the complete opposite. Dysfunction, love,
co-dependency, violence, racism and discrimination, ignorance and fear all exist in this story. My mother taught
me that with belief in self, determination and persistence I would be able to accomplish anything. I am dedicating
this book to my mother, Doris Ann Gist, and all the mothers out there that had to raise their children alone.
